HEALTH

Health is one of the main goal of YCC of Ghana and below are the research made by the YCC health research team about health in Ghana. The health condition of most Ghanaians and the medical care awarded to them is distinctly inferior to that of developed countries. Many villages will have their own health post, towns their hospitals and some communities does not have access to it at all. But these are usually understaffed with especially the lack of adequately qualified staff being a problem (partly as a result of the very sizeable brain drain out of the country). Moreover, due to financial constraints and lack of education, the majority of Ghanaians will just seek medical help when they feel it to be absolutely necessary. This means that the help sometimes comes too late. To top it all, once a doctor has prescribed a treatment, patients will not always buy the prescribed drugs, glasses etc. for lack of money.

The two major health problems affecting the Nation (and the continent as a whole) are HIV/AIDS and Malaria. Despite vigorous campaigning by the government and other stake holders, the estimated number of Youths living with HIV/AIDS are between 1.9 % and 5 % (WHO and UNAIDS estimate for 2003). The second one is malaria, with a staggering 2.8 million of clinical malaria cases reported and more then 3500 malaria deaths reported in 2002 (Ministry of Health and National Malaria Control Program).

HIV/AIDS is a big problem in Ghana as in most of sub-Saharan Africa. Though in Ghana it has not yet reached the proportions of South Africa or Botswana, it is already qualified as an epidemic and the disease has spread into the general population and thus poses a great danger to the promising future of Ghana. It is very important to raise the consciousness of the population regarding the subject, particularly in rural areas. At the moment YCC of Ghana work with groups which create awareness about the menace.
With the above research YCC of Ghana is working with health groups and institutions by:

  • Educating
  • Counseling
  • Creating awareness
  • Placement of Volunteers for counselling
  • Raising fund for health projects
  • Organise workshops, seminars, conferences about health etc
  • Medical Outreach
